Through our campaigning work we strive to drive up standards of safety, protect our members’ jobs, improve access to training, and raise awareness of the maritime and inland waterways industry.

 

Asbestos

The Union is seeking stricter controls on the use of asbestos onboard ships, and campaigning for compensation for members suffering from asbestos-related diseases.»


Bullying and harassment

Nautilus has been campaigning to eradicate the problem for more than ten years, and is working to bring about an industry-wide culture change.»

Nautilus is backing the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) fair transport europe campaign.»

This campaign tackles the problem of vessels with poor safety standards and squalid living conditions, with too many seafarers living in fear of being abandoned without pay.»


Fatigue

Nautilus believes seafarer fatigue is one of the biggest issues threatening health and safety in the shipping industry, and is campaigning to prevent excessive working hours.»


Flags of convenience

Nautilus International is campaigning with the ITF against the transfer of ships to flags of convenience in order to evade national laws and downgrade seafarers' terms and conditions.»


Freight by water

Nautilus campaigns to ensure that national governments and European regulators support and promote the carrying of freight by water - which has many advantages over road and rail.»

Nautilus campaigns to ensure that our members can undertake their vital work in the safest possible conditions, with all the necessary protection and compensation.»


Support for training

As well as offering courses and career development grants, Nautilus campaigns to ensure that training for seafarers and inland boat workers is supported by governments and industry.»
