TUC launches campaign to stop UK government 'attack' on unions

22 September 2021

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is urging union members to lobby their MPs as part of a new campaign against controversial changes to the role of the trade union certification officer.

The TUC says that the planned changes – which include introducing a new financial levy on unions alongside additional powers for the regulator – amount to an attack, which will make it more difficult for unions to support working people.

'Rather than cracking down on bad employers, the government is trying to tie unions up in more red tape. These reforms are based on politics rather than the real problems working people face,' said TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady.

In response, the TUC has developed a new campaign tool. This helps union members ask their MPs to contact the secretary of state about halting the plans and encourages them to tell their representative aboutwork that unions are doing for them. Nautilus International, which would be impacted by the changes, is urging its members to take part.
