Apply nowJob Purpose
• To provide technical advice and support to the Master at all times.
• To be responsible for the safety and efficiency of all mechanical machinery, electrical equipment and hydraulic systems on the vessel.
• To ensure clear, positive communication and understanding is maintained with the shore based Superintendent, on all matters technical.
Duties of the Post Holder
• To take all possible precautions to prevent any form of environmental pollution.
• Able to provide the marine engineering skills and competencies, necessary to support a 24 hours towage service (including additional call out support when required).
• Able to monitor,maintain and repair (if possible) all of the vessel’s electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems, assemblies and equipment.
• Able to understand the engine management systems, fault codes and diagnose associated problems
• To always enact safe working practises and ensure a safe work environment at all times.
• To monitor and report to the Master immediately any damage, undue wear or unsafe condition of any of the vessel’s equipment.
• To report and record defects inline with VSM procedures
• To oversee and plan all bunkering, oil and bilge waste operations
• To undertake all relevant planned maintenance and be fully versed in the use and application of the port’s planned maintenance system.
• To provide engineering support to the pilot boats operated by the Port of Dover
• To record, monitor and maintain accurate fuel, oil and lubricants register.
• To retain, be aware and keep up to date with all relevant engineering information, legislation and requirements of statutory bodies, taking appropriate action as necessary.
• To always ensure sufficient fuel, spares etc. are held on board to sustain at least 24 hours continuous operations.
• To support the Technical Superintendent as requested, with any technical or engineering works related to the Port vessels
• To actively participate in ship yard repairs and maintenance periods
• To actively input and support reviews of the VSM system, particularly in respect to technical procedures and risk assessments
• To provide reports when required and carry out any other necessary relevant routine administrative duties.
• Capable of undertaking mooring operations on deck as required
• Able to provide back up to the master and mate in respect of operational requirements
• Assist with general cleaning of accommodation / Engine room.

• Any other duties assigned by the manager or supervisor from time to time. Such duties will be reasonable in relation to the job holder’s skills, abilities and status.
• To comply with environmental instructions and to identify potential risks to the environment, or areas where environmental impact can be reduced.
• To comply with all safety instructions and to accept responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by what you do. To identify potential risks in the work area, and to report such risks promptly to management.

Vessel based team management role, i.e. Chief or Second Engineer with a team leadership background Excellent working knowledge of tugs and dredgers and the systems commonly found onboard Technical and routine report writing |
Specialist Skills and Knowledge Good working Knowledge of the ISM code, Health and Safety Legislation and MARPOL. |
STCW Certificate 111/2 Chief Engineer Motor Unlimited Experience of hydraulic and electrical engineering. Basic welding and fabrication skills |
