Fighting on after D-Day

Normandy: The Sailors’ Story, by Nick Hewitt

imagesz59j.pngTo tie in with the 80th anniversary of D-Day last year, Yale University Press published this detailed and readable book by veteran ship restorer and historian Nick Hewitt, which puts the efforts of the Allied navies in the Battle for France centre stage.

As well as detailing the famous Normandy Landings themselves, Hewitt takes the story a step further. He chronicles the immense efforts undertaken by military and merchant ships to sustain the Allied beachhead in Normandy and beat off German counterattacks. This fascinating story has all too often been neglected, making this book not only a good read but an important contribution to the history of the Second World War.
