The Maritime Educational Foundation (MEF) has announced that it will provide £1.2 million to secure the future of the national Careers at Sea awareness campaign There’s always more to sea, extending its support through to 2029.
Approved by the MEF’s trustees, the commitment will provide £400,000 per year from autumn 2026 – the third year of the campaign – enabling the initiative to expand its reach and maintain year-round visibility. The investment will allow high-impact outdoor advertising, including placements at major cultural and sporting events, while strengthening the campaign’s digital strategy by increasing both advertising spend and audience reach across key online platforms.
The Careers at Sea campaign is central to highlighting the importance of the maritime sector and attracting future seafarers. MEF’s long-term backing is intended to allow the campaign team to target a diverse range of potential recruits and raise public understanding of the industry’s role in the UK economy.
David Appleton, Nautilus head of professional and technical and chair of the Maritime Educational Foundation, said the decision underscores MEF’s commitment to supporting the training and development of UK seafarers.
‘This long-term investment reflects the Maritime Educational Foundation’s commitment to our charitable objective of supporting projects that facilitate and promote the education of UK seafarers in maritime skills,’ he said. ‘The shipping industry is vital to the UK economy, and raising awareness of the opportunities within it is essential for maintaining a strong and skilled workforce for the future.’
