Nautilus honoured Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) in the UK with a heartfelt day of remembrance, reflection, and community spirit in London and Nautilus Mariners' Park in Wallasey.
Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson represented the union at a London wreath-laying ceremony by the Merchant Navy Association at the Merchant Navy Memorial in Trinity Square Gardens. The ceremony, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, was also attended by the master of the Queen Mary 2 Captain Aseem Hashmi, the Royal Navy’s Merchant Navy liaison officer Lt Cdr David Carter, and the associate priest of All Hallows by the Tower Church, Reverend Dr John Barker.
In a speech during the ceremony, Mr Dickinson said: 'As we commemorate VE Day, we rightly remember the sacrifices made on land and in the air. But we must also pay tribute to the extraordinary courage of our seafarers – those of the UK Merchant Navy and allied merchant fleets – whose vital role in the war effort is too often overlooked. Their sacrifice was immense, their contribution indispensable.
'Over 30,000 British merchant seafarers gave their lives – more, proportionally, than any armed service. Their bravery kept supply lines open and nations alive. We remember them with pride and gratitude. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.'

In Wallasey, the commemorations began at the care home on the Park with a two-minute silence, giving residents and staff a moment to pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. This solemn observance set the tone for a day dedicated to honouring the past while fostering connections among residents.
In the afternoon, the care home hosted a cheese and wine gathering, providing a relaxed setting for conversation and companionship. This was followed by the popular Memory Lane session, where residents shared personal stories, listened to wartime music, and reflected on their experiences. The session sparked meaningful dialogue and helped preserve the rich history held within the community.
To complement the day's events, the kitchen team served a special VE Day menu featuring traditional favourites.
The team at Mariners' Park reflected on a meaningful and enjoyable day, filled with memories, conversation, and celebration. The event not only honoured the legacy of VE Day but also strengthened the bonds between residents through shared history and remembrance.
In the London office, staff also observed two minutes of silence and reflection from 12 noon.
