Members back fight against unpaid wages in superyacht sector

25 October 2023

Nautilus members have endorsed a motion recognising the successes of the Union's yacht team and committing them to four more years of work on behalf of members at the Union's General Meeting in Liverpool.

The motion Unpaid Wages in Superyacht sector highlighted the £4.3 million regained for members in unpaid wages for members in the superyacht sector since 2020. It noted the precariousness of much employment in the sector and ongoing problems such as bullying and harassment, and therefore the need for yacht professionals to have a trade union like Nautilus to protect their interests when things go wrong.

The motion was proposed by member Jessica Tyson, and seconded by Henk Eijkenaar.

Following a vote of members in support of the motion, it has now become a resolution committing Nautilus to continue to organise within the sector and support individual members to ensure their rights are upheld by crewing agencies and vessel owners. Further, Nautilus undertakes to inform yacht professionals about their rights (for example, under the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006), and liaise with key industry stakeholder organisations to achieve all of the above.

The full text of the motion is available in the My Nautilus members' area of the Nautilus International website.
