Prestigious maritime women's event aligns with Nautilus values

3 July 2025

Nautilus International represented members at the annual WISTA UK summer event at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), reinforcing the Union's commitment to supporting women in the maritime sector.

2024 WISTA Woman of the Year Nusrat Ghani MP announced OCIMF managing director Captain Karen Davis as the 2025 recipient of the award. Capt Davis, a veteran master mariner in the tanker trades, addressed the gathering, highlighting progress in gender equality within the industry.

The event also recognised International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) secretary general Thomas Kazakos as WISTA Man of the Year 2025, and Maritime UK CEO Chris Shirling-Rooke as WISTA Personality of the Year 2025.

IMO secretary-general Arsenio Dominguez delivered a short speech acknowledging his role in advancing gender equality. Repeating a phrase he has used previously, he stated that as a man, he is 'part of the problem, but also part of the solution' to achieving equity and inclusion for women in shipping. He emphasised his commitment to dialogue and urged women to come forward with their stories and ideas for change.

For Nautilus, the event aligned with the Union's ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in shipping. Nautilus continues to advocate for equal opportunities and career advancement for female maritime professionals through policy work, training initiatives, and industry partnerships.
Significant work remains to achieve gender parity across all levels of the industry.
