Nautilus is reminding members to remain alert for new job scams after a member lost a significant sum to scammers impersonating the offshore drilling company Seadrill.
The member was contacted by an individual purporting to be from Seadrill UK, who offered him a contract. After signing this contract and providing personal identity documents, he was asked to send money to a different company for insurance, which he proceeded to do.
After this, the scammers requested even more money. Growing suspicious, the seafarer looked into the matter further and discovered that he had been scammed.
If you believe that you have been the victim of a recruitment scam, please report the incident to the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) via www.itfshipbesure.org, where you can also find advice on how to recognise common scams perpetrated on seafarers.
