Harbour towage (assisting large vessels in and out of ports) is essential to the safe and efficient operation of UK ports, and ultimately the flow of trade in and out of the UK.

Your job

Apprentice Small Vessel Chief Engineer
We are recruiting a Level 4 Apprenticeship, which allows the apprentice to become an "EOOW Small Vessel Engineer". After completing the sea time, the apprentice can grow to "Small Vessel Chief Engineer".

We follow the “standard MCA-approved program for EOOW” section 4.3 in MSN 1904 to gain EOOW COC.

This course is run over 4 years, time will be spent aboard as well as living on campus at Fleetwood Nautical College. If you love engines then this apprenticeship is right for you. By becoming an an Chief Engineer through the apprenticeship route you will get to learn all you need to kick start a career as a Small Vessel Chief Engineer.

The objective of the position after finalizing the course
The Small Vessel Chief Engineer ensures that equipment and installations on board are in good condition and ready to operate.

To execute maintenance, ensure, and improve the vessel systems, equipment, and parts in compliance with Class, Flag State, HSE-Q, maintenance strategy, and other compulsory regulations in a safe, effective, and cost-efficient manner. Ensure that spare parts, consumables, and inspections are planned and ordered on time.

The Chief Engineer reports hierarchical to the Tug Master and functional to the local Superintendent.

What type of applicant are we looking for?

  • Passion for the maritime industry
  • 5 GCSE’s which must include English, Math’s, and Science. Grade 5 and above
  • Capable of passing a Medical ENG 1
  • Minimum age requirement - 17+
  • Living in the UK
  • Team Player
