A new Marine Accident Investigation Unit is being set up to replace the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB). It will be an independent unit responsible for the investigation of all types of marine accidents to, or on board, Irish vessels worldwide and other vessels in Irish territorial waters and inland waterways. 

The Department is seeking a Chief Investigator (Designate) at Principal Officer (Higher) Level to lead the new Marine Accident Investigation Unit (MAIU). 

The position of Chief Investigator will be a challenging role. They will be actively involved in the establishment of the Unit, including organisational structure and staff recruitment. They will also play a key role in the effective leadership of the investigation activities undertaken by the MAIU whose key goal will be to improve and enhance the safety of the maritime sector.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding maritime professional who can lead the new Unit into the future, with a focus on regulatory compliance and quality of work. They will lead and manage an overall team of investigators and administration staff. 

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the leadership of the investigation activities undertaken by the MAIU, whose ultimate goal will be to improve and enhance the safety of the maritime sector.
