Director - Operations

The Corporation of Trinity House

As an island nation the UK is almost entirely reliant of the safe arrival and departure of shipping from its ports. 95% of the UK’s goods enter or leave the UK by sea. Shipping and the maritime sectors are, therefore, among the most important industries to our island economy. Every single person in the UK consumes goods daily that have been imported by ship. Manufacturers, energy companies, supermarkets, hospitals and many more vital services rely on ships and seafarers for their imports. Some 65 million sea-borne passengers globally rely on shipping for access to public services, employment, business and holiday travel every year.

The Corporation of Trinity House (TH) is the largest maritime charity in England as well as being the General Lighthouse Authority (GLA) for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. TH GLA, which is a non-departmental public body, operates at no expense to the general taxpayer, and is funded by light dues and commercial income, which are paid into the ring-fenced General Lighthouse Fund (GLF) under a user pay system.

Approximately 80% of all UK imports and exports by volume are entering the British Isles Ports using Trinity House Buoys, Lighthouses and seabed surveys by a workforce of only circa 300.

TH has agreed a mission and vision and set out its strategic intent for the next 20 years. The organisation’s values, which embrace a safety-first culture, have also been refreshed to include a focus on the things that really matter to TH as a Corporation. These include innovation, quality, sustainability, integrity, efficiency, equality and wellbeing.
