About Us

The Port of London Authority (PLA) is the statutory harbour authority for the tidal Thames from the outer estuary to Teddington. As part of our duties under the Port Marine Safety Code, we manage and maintain the port’s navigational safety management system.

The Role

As part of the Chief Harbour Master’s team, you will provide general support to the Deputy Marine Pilotage Manager (DMPM). You will work as part of a team providing support in the training of Marine pilots in the Ship Simulator, planning and co-ordinating training for the progression of pilots, and arranging the daily manning of the Simulator and key duties. You will be required to liaise with the pilots, other departments and suppliers reference equipment for pilots such as VHF radios, PPE, iPads and pilot navigation software on iPads. The role includes statistical and performance analysis, delivering management reports, maintaining records and agreeing pilot payroll variables. This role may require occasional shift work to cover the Pilot Co-ordinator role.

The role includes supervision of the Pilot Co-ordinators and an Assistant Pilotage Support Officer.

The Person

The successful candidate will have marine experience and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and I.T. support software. Experience of Port operations and knowledge of ship simulators is preferred, with excellent analytical and presentation skills. We require a resilient person with good communication skills and a flexible attitude to work as part of a small team, that may on occasion be expected to work off site.
