Location: Port of Workington, Cumbria, England, CA14 2JH

The Port of Workington is a busy municipal port located at the mouth of the river Derwent, it serves coastal trading vessels of up to 140m in length and handles a variety of dry cargoes. The town of Workington is situated at the entrance of the beautiful Solway Firth estuary and is in close proximity to the Lake District national park.

The successful applicant will be required to conduct several pilotage acts per month, plus provide holiday and sickness cover. Training will initially be for Class 2 pilotage, with advancement to Class 1 once experience has been gained.

Essential Requirements:

• MCA Certificate of Competency (Deck).
• Navigational expertise and good situational awareness.
• Adaptability - including on occasions having to work at short notice.
• Able to take the lead role within a small navigational bridge team.
• Relevant experience within the Port Industry/Merchant Navy/Royal Navy.
• Interpersonal skills including proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language.

Desirable Skills/Experience

• Bridge Team Management/Marine Resource Management.
• Marine Safety Management Systems.
• Risk control and dynamic risk assessment.
• Ship handling of coastal size vessels between 50-140m LOA.
• Knowledge of the PMSC.
• Provide excellent Customer Service.

Shipping movements are tidal and Pilotage acts conducted 2 hours either side of High Water.

Pilotage is short, technically challenging, and will best suit those with an interest in ship handling.

Each act takes approximately one hours duration, despite this being a part time position it offers an excellent remuneration/time ratio.
