£37,155-£50,760 the band minimum is the normal starting pay for those new to a role. In exceptional circumstances, when relevant skills and experience can be identified & depending on Certificate of Competency, a higher starting salary may be considered.

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Second Officer (Navigation & Safety) join the crew of the RRS Sir David Attenborough. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining close knit team of the RRS Sir David Attenborough as it carries out scientific research across the polar regions. The ship is world leading in its scientific capabilities and regularly carries out science trials across the world with a driven focus on the Antarctic regions.
Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop role specific skills to compliment your time on the ship. There will also be standard training provided that is specially developed for Polar travel.
You’ll be joining a world-leading interdisciplinary research organisation, that is committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support, you need to thrive at BAS.
Though this role will have mixed duties of Navigation and Safety, the main focus will be the safety side of the role in the beginning.
Some of your main responsibilities will include:
- Act as Safety Officer and consider risk management onboard as a whole. Investigate safety incidents, promote a positive safety culture on board, and conduct crew training and briefings as required.
- In charge of a navigational watch at sea while in port.
- Assist in deck/boat/scientific operations as required by the Master and Chief Officer.
- Maintenance of Life Saving Appliances as per the ship’s Safety Plan and Planned Maintenance System.
For the role of Second Officer we are looking for someone who has:
- Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions
- Officer of the Watch unlimited (Deck) CoC (and CeC for non-UK CoC)
- Strong awareness of health, safety, security and environmental issues
- Demonstrate success in a relevant work environment, backed by evidence of significant appropriate specialist knowledge
