In a Seagoing Deck Officer role with knowledge of firefighting onboard and looking for a fantastic and one-off opportunity ashore that offers something different?

Want a maritime job that offers variety whilst also the ability to go home after work?

Do you have enthusiasm and passion for teaching others?

If so, this could be the job for you!

Who we are:

As a part of Warsash Maritime School (Southampton Solent University), Safety Training provides commercial education, training and consultancy services to the international maritime and offshore industries. We are based on the Warsash Campus (SO31 9ZL) and train students from cadet level to Chief Engineer/Master (maritime courses) and new joiners to experienced personnel (offshore and renewables courses) in the 4 Safety Training portfolio areas:

  • Fire Fighting
  • Maritime (Survival craft, Sea survival and Fast Rescue Boat),
  • Medical (first aid and medical care)
  • Offshore (including Helicopter Underwater Escape training (HUET)).
  • Our Vacancy:

We have a vacancy for a Senior Lecturer to manage our firefighting courses, deliver fire theory classroom elements (with classroom fire demonstrations) and assist with both the practical and theoretical delivery of other courses such as Lifeboat and Sea Survival.

Our Fire Fighting Senior Lecturer:

  • Manages the Fire portfolio of courses and creates innovative and interactive teaching programmes for this area.
  • Teaches Fire theory sessions using all the practical fire-fighting equipment in class and on our fixed installations demonstration unit.
  • Liaises with our Fire Fighting Instructors who deliver the practical live fire elements.
  • Organises maintenance and liaises with contractors for maintenance of the major fire facilities (e.g. the hot fire training unit).
  • Teaches theory and practical for other STCW courses such as lifeboat and Sea Survival (this includes actually instructing in the boats at our pier head and getting in the water at the pool!)

The successful candidate:

You don’t have to be an experienced maritime lecturer/instructor (although it certainly helps if you are!) – first and foremost we are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated maritime professional to join our team - who has experience of shipboard firefighting systems, equipment and onboard fire procedures.

As this job role also involves pool courses (Survival), you must be a confident swimmer and able to take charge of safety critical activities at our pier head and pool facility. Due to the nature of moving between facility sites, the successful applicant will also hold a full UK driving licence and be able to drive vehicles on University business. Very occasional unsocial hours and UK/international travel may be required as we periodically undertake consultancy work away from our Warsash campus base.

This role attracts an additional 10% WMA allowance

Interview date: 12 December 2024.

Closing date: 28 November 2024.

  • If shortlisted, interviews will be conducted on Thursday 12th December 2024
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to present a 10min presentation (MS PowerPoint based) entitled:

‘The challenges of Lithium Battery fires at sea’
