Are you being managed well? Please share your experiences in my study
10 March 2026
I'm writing to ask fellow Nautilus members to give a few minutes of their time to help with my research.
I'm in my last year at the University of Plymouth, studying a BSc in Navigation and Maritime Sciences. I’m also a deck cadet with North Star, through Ship Safe Training Group.
As a requirement of my degree, I'm writing a dissertation, where I am researching management training in the maritime industry and comparing it to all other professional fields.
I'm collecting data for this with a questionnaire, which has two separate sections, the first of which focuses on a person’s personal management training, and the second on a person's manager/supervisor, and how they feel that they are managed.
The questionnaire is aimed at anyone who is:
- over the age of 18
- working in any role in any industry
All responses are anonymous, and I am keeping the questionnaire open until 27 March 2026, when I will start analysing the results.
My aim is to see if there are any major differences or links in management training in the other industries compared to the maritime industry.

Thank you to everyone who shares their experiences

Why we still commemorate the Titanic disaster
As mariners, we don’t think of the romanticised version of the Titanic from films and novels; we remember the safety regulations that came into force as a direct consequence of the Titanic disaster.
