Maersk steps down from ICS board over climate issues

15 July 2022

AP Moller-Maersk has withdrawn from the board of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) due to the organisation's stance on climate change.

Maersk executive and board member Henriette Hallberg Thygesen stepped down from her position at ICS following an internal review of Maersk's involvement with ICS.

According to the company’s website, Maersk examines its membership status of trade associations annually to ensure that they 'lobby in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement as well as other key issues'.

Maersk has not indicated what its specific objections to the ICS's policy are. However, the ICS works with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on climate initiatives, with the aim of reducing the industry's carbon emissions to 50% of 2008 levels by 2050. By contrast, Maersk announced its intention last year to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the business by 2040.

Maersk said it would instead be putting its resources into its membership of the World Shipping Council (WSC), a trade group for container shippers.
