Nautilus members eligible to join UK ocean science project for sustainable development

Nautilus International members are eligible to volunteer for the UK's National Decade Committee (UKNDC), which will work on the country's contribution to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The UN project – announced in 2017 but beginning this year – seeks to create a framework for ocean science to help countries sustainably manage the world's oceans. The ultimate goal is to back the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

There are 13 spaces to be filled, with successful applicants meeting two days per quarter (usually online). The International Working Group of the Marine Science Coordination Committee states that it is hoping to attract volunteers from among early career professionals, youth and community voices, industry and civil society.

Those wishing to apply should create a personal statement of 750 words, explaining their engagement with ocean science and experience of developing networks and communicating their passion for ocean issues. Candidates should set out how they would work with others to deliver the key objectives of the UK National Decade Committee:

• to inspire to engagement across the UK to deliver the societal outcomes of the UN Decade of Ocean Science
• to promote and enable the development and delivery of transformational science that delivers the societal outcomes of the UN Decade of Ocean Science
• to promote and enable a whole of society approach to the UN Decade of Ocean Science
