International maritime welfare charity Sailors' Society has appointed a new port chaplain to its Southampton team. Revd Hasna Khatun will provide support to the thousands of seafarers who visit the port each year.
An ordained Pioneer Minister, Revd Khatun has held several faith-based roles over the years. Most recently she was Chaplain to Centenary Quay, in the Southampton suburb of Woolston. In the past, she has also worked as a teacher and actor and speaks several languages.
Revd Khatun said of her new role: 'Seafarers can live a lonely existence, spending up to a year at sea away from family and friends, so I'm delighted to be starting a role where I'll be able to provide practical and pastoral care while they visit our shores.'
Sailors' Society's chairman Peter Swift said that Revd Khatun would be a 'great asset' to the team bringing a 'wealth of experience from her previous roles'.
Mr Swift said the Revd would 'provide vital support' to those in need, especially as 'seafarers have been under particularly huge strain of late, working at the sharp end of the pandemic'.
Sailors' Society chaplains and ship visitors reach out to more than 1,000 seafarers worldwide every day, providing support such as Wi-Fi hotspots, transportation and a listening ear.
