Minister highlights UK efforts to reach net zero in shipping at LISW headline conference

15 September 2021

The UK will bring forward ambitious shipping initiatives at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Minister for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, told delegates at London International Shipping Week (LISW).

In her opening address to the LISW headline conference Ms Trevelyan thanked the industry on behalf of the government for its 'tenacity and determination' during the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said that as the UK returns to normality, it is time to address the world's greatest challenge, climate change, noting that 'the UK is in a position to demonstrate real leadership both domestically and internationally.'

'There is no doubt this radical transformation of the maritime sector will be challenging but it also brings extraordinary opportunities,' she said.

She discussed the government's commitments on the issue of climate change, fostering a domestic net zero policy and net zero transport system. This includes the ten point plan for a green industrial revolution, £20 million Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, and the Department for Transport's measures aimed at delivering net zero (including efforts in maritime).

Ms Trevelyan highlighted the government's recently published decarbonisation plans for the entire UK transport sector, which builds on the 2019 Clean Maritime Plan and sets out the intention to consult industry on a range of ambitious net zero proposals. She said that ambitious shipping initiatives will be presented at COP26.

Internationally, she also brought up the government's announcement this week that it will support the IMO commitment to reach net zero emissions for global shipping by 2050, and said the UK had pushed at IMO for accelerated emissions reduction.
