Glasgow cadet honoured with Bevis Minter Award by Nautilus

25 November 2020

Jake Napoli has received the prestigious Bevis Minter Award, which honours officer trainees who show great determination and overcome significant challenges in pursuit of a maritime career.

The award was established by Nautilus 25 years ago in memory of Bevis Minter, a former Nautilus Council chairman who was a passionate advocate of British seafaring skills.

Five different colleges take turns to recommend their 'most worthy' cadet for the award: South Tyneside, Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, Warsash Maritime Academy, Blackpool and the Fylde College (Fleetwood) and the National Maritime College of Ireland. They select the cadet from the five years since their previous nomination.

Mr Napoli was nominated by Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, which he attended from 2015 until his graduation in July 2018.

His mature approach, problem-solving abilities and hands-on skill deeply impressed the faculty and industry partners during his HNC Cadetship.

Glasgow College also commended him for his leadership skills and the way that he created an 'inclusive environment' within his class. Mr Napoli went on to represent the college at Merchant Navy open days, Memorial events, Royal visits and the Education Scotland student review.

The college said: 'His values and behaviours throughout his cadetship have resulted in him being an exceptional cadet with all the qualities and attributes of a Merchant Navy officer in abundance.'

Mr Napoli stayed on at Glasgow to complete his HND in Marine Engineering and joined Teekay LNG in August 2019.

The UK Branch Conference is being held virtually this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, so alternative arrangements are being made to present the award to Mr Napoli.
